Battle of the Budget
money Whether your family income is $30,000 a year or $300,000, you'll benefit from having a budget.

Legal notices in newspapers are full of individuals, professionals, and business owners who had to declare bankruptcy because their spending outdistanced their income, even when their incomes were higher than average. The reasons vary, but our very own personal spending habits can be the first hurdle to trip us up when it comes to the finish line of financial success.

The first step in balancing income to spending is to avoid traps in planning and budgeting. Here are some helpful tips for planning your own budget:

Know yourself when establishing a budget--If you're not a stickler for detail don't create a budget that would make the feds jealous. Instead, keep it simple. Try budgeting monthly instead of weekly and don't make cuts you know you won't honor.

Be realistic--Use your credit card, checkbook and statements from the last 12 months as a guide. It tells you what you will and will not live without.

Plan for the unplanned--In a recent Gallup Poll, 67% attributed unplanned expenses to what made them go off-budget.

The ATM trap--ATMs are on every corner, but don't let them tempt you. If you have to use an ATM, take out a set amount at a set time during the week and then put the ATM card away.

Holiday Spending--The joy of the holidays falls in December; the bills from the holidays fall in January. It's been that way for centuries. Budget for the holidays by putting aside a little each month and "do not open until Christmas."

Personal And Family Budgeting Advice--As a member of LINCONE Federal Credit Union, you have access to Accel, A FREE no obligation financial education and counseling program. Make the call today and plan your budget. Accel counselors are available Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. To use this service, simply call 1-877-33ACCEL (332-2235) or visit them on the web at www.accelservices.org.

Don't Become A Victim

Don't be a target Protect yourself from identity theft! Clever thieves can open accounts, run up thousands of dollars in debt, and disrupt your financial life for months or even years. Now more than ever before, it's important to take steps to protect yourself from this growing crime.

KEEP YOUR NUMBERS SECRET
Identity thieves don't steal things, they steal information. You need to be particularly careful with account numbers, Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and social security numbers.

NEVER give out your personal information by phone or email unless you initiated the contact and you are sure who you are dealing with.

DO NOT carry your Social Security Card in your wallet. Buy a cross cut shredder, and shred unneeded receipts, statements, credit card offers and other documents containing personal or financial information.

STAY SAFE ONLINE
The internet can be fertile ground for identity thieves. Use a firewall, along with anti-spyware and anti-virus software. Be sure to keep these programs up to date.

If you receive an email asking for personal or financial information, do not respond and do not follow any links in the email. Instead, contact the company directly using a phone number or email address you know is legitimate.

When shopping online, make sure you are on a secure web site. Look for a locked padlock in the lower right-hand corner, and "https" in the web address.

MONITOR YOUR CREDIT REPORT
There are services available that can monitor your report for a fee, or you can do it yourself for free. By law, everyone is now entitled to a free report from each of the three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion). Simply order one report every four months, and watch for changes or suspicious account activity. Any incorrect information should be reported to the credit bureau immediately!

To order your free report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com and request the report online or call 1.877.322.8228.

ELIMINATE MAILED CREDIT AND INSURANCE OFFERS sent by companies that obtain lists from the credit bureaus by calling 1.888.5OPT.OUT. In addition, return the "opt out" form included with other credit offerings.

CONVERT ALL ACCOUNT STATEMENTS to electronic statements to reduce the risk of mailed statements.

STAY A STEP AHEAD
With new schemes emerging all the time, your best recourse is to keep yourself informed. To learn more about fighting back against identity theft, visit the following websites:

ACCEL Financial Counseling

CAUTION: Your Identity At Risk

Millions of Americans are affected each year by identity theft. If your identity is stolen, you could spend months or years and possibly thousands of dollars reclaiming your name and cleaning up the mess that the thief has left you.

You can minimize your risk by aggressively managing your personal information and through continual awareness of the problem. Here are some examples:

Social Security Number - the Key to Your Castle:
  • Do not carry your Social Security Number with you.
  • Keep it in a secure location like in a safe at home.
  • Give your Social Security Number only when it is absolutely necessary.
  • Never put your Social Security Number on checks.

Passwords - As Good As Gold
  • Create passwords for all of your accounts.
  • Do not use easily identifiable information.
  • When you are asked for your mother's maiden name on an application for a new account, try using a password instead.
  • Store your passwords in a safe place like a safe at home.

Technology - Be on the Lookout
  • Update your virus protection software regularly on your home computer.
  • Use a secure browser to guard the privacy of your online transactions.
  • Download security repairs or patches from your operating system's web site.
  • Don't download files from strangers or click on hyperlinks from people you don't know.
  • Keep a record of purchases made online.
  • Avoid using the automatic log-in feature offered on online services that saves your username and password.

At Home - Manage Your Personal Information
  • Buy a crosscut shredder and destroy unneeded documents that include personal information.
  • Don't leave personal information in plain view where roommates, relatives or outside help can see it.
  • Stay on top of your finances, especially bill due dates, so you'll know if a bill is missing.
  • Report any questionable charges on your bills.
  • Don't put your credit card number or account number on checks when you pay your bills by mail.
  • Keep all credit card receipts and cross reference them with your credit card statement to make sure you are billed for the correct items.
  • Monitor your accounts and reconcile your checkbook regularly.
  • Guard your mail and your trash.

When You Are Out and About
  • If you pay for merchandise with a check, don't allow the clerk to write your credit card number on the check.
  • Carry only the information that you actually need.
  • Don't lay your credit card down on a counter or table.

At Work - Practice Security and Question Everything
Protect your personal information at work. Find out who has access to your personal information and whether records are kept in a secure location. Also ask how records are destroyed when they become outdated.

In summary, make sure you protect what you can control as best you can. Then constantly monitor your financial records to make sure thieves haven't gotten a hold of the data that is out of your hands. The best offense is a good defense. Be aware of identity theft, keep close track of your information and report any suspicious activity immediately.

An Expedition of Savings

Terry and Amy C., 30+ year members of the credit union, will tell you they "Highly recommend the credit union when you need to finance your vehicle. The personal service was wonderful! Everything about our loan was explained in detail and we trust the credit union," said Amy C.

Terry and Amy purchased an '05 Ford Expedition in June and didn't feel comfortable financing with the dealer. They called the credit union and found that they could save money on the extended warranty, GAP insurance, interest rate plus no fees.

They visited with Ben Martens, Financial Service Representative, and he told them what the credit union can offer. "We didn't realize the credit union offered extended warranties or GAP insurance. The coverage was exactly the same at a much lower cost then the dealer, which saved us close to $3,300. That isn't including the lower interest rate savings." said Amy.

"We were so happy with our experience with the credit union that we told our kids to move their vehicle loans to the credit union."

Terry will retire from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Nov 1st after 34 years, and Amy is a purchasing assistant with LPS.

2005-2006 Scholarship Winner

Mary Ann R., LincOne FCU member, is one of the Lincoln Chapter of Credit Union's 2005/2006 Scholarship winners. Contestants wrote essays about "Why consumers should have a choice in belonging to a credit union"

When asked how she found out about the scholarship contest Mary Ann chuckled and said "It was really funny, both my parents independently brought home a scholarship entry form after visiting the credit union. Obviously I was happy they did."

Mary Ann learned several things about credit unions during the contest. Her research about credit unions took her from 1935 to present day. "Of all the research I did one thing that really stood out was that credit unions focus on the community and their members. I really felt that this was important and it was the main focus of my essay," said Mary Ann.

Mary Ann was presented a $650 check which was made payable to her and Nebraska Wesleyan University where she is a sophomore pursuing a double majoring in special/elementary education.

Congratulations Mary Ann!

GOTCHA COVERED WINNER

Mark M was the winner of an extended warranty package worth up-to $1,200.00 offered by the credit union during the "Gotcha Covered" promotion. Mark qualified to win after he financed his 2002 Nissan Exterra with the credit union, which he purchased in June. Although he purchased the extended warranty from the credit union before his name was drawn, the credit union reimbursed $1,200 off of the $1,500 price of the warranty.

Mark learned about the credit union from his Novartis co-workers on first shift in the OTC Solids Department. He was glad they told him about the credit union because he was very satisfied and stated, "The approval process was quick and the interest rate was great. The individual attention and the personal service was also great. I would definitely recommend the credit union."

The credit union management and staff would like to congratulate Mark and encourage other members to always think of the credit union first for their borrowing or financing needs.

DON'T TAKE THE BAIT

Phishing You've probably heard about identity theft - people stealing other people's personal information to use for illegal purposes. In a new scheme called "phishing," ID thieves trick people into providing their Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, PIN numbers, mothers' maiden names, or other personal information by pretending to be someone they're not.

How does phishing work?
The most common form of phishing is by email. Pretending to be from a legitimate retailer, financial institution, or government agency, the sender asks to "confirm" your personal information for some made-up reason. Typically, the email contains a link to a phony Web site that looks just like the real thing. You enter your personal information on the Web site - and send it into the hands of identity thieves.

Phishers also use the phone to hunt for victims' personal information. Some pose as employers and call or send emails to people who have listed themselves on job search Web sites.

How can you tell if the person or company who contacted you is legitimate or a con artist?
Be suspicious if someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks for your personal information. It's a warning sign that something is "phishy." Legitimate companies and agencies don't operate that way.

Phishing Don't click on links in emails that ask you to provide personal information. To check whether an email or call is really from the company or agency, contact it directly by phone or online. If you don't have the telephone number, get it from the phone book, directory assistance, or the Internet. Use a search engine to find the official Web site; Job seekers should also verify the person's identity before providing personal information to someone claiming to be a prospective employer.

What should you do if you got hooked by a phishing scam?
If you provided account numbers, PINs, or passwords to a phisher, notify the companies with which you have those accounts immediately. Put a "fraud alert" on your files at the credit reporting bureaus. For information about how to do that and other advice for ID theft victims, contact the Federal Trade Commission's ID Theft Clearinghouse at www.consumer.gov/idtheft or toll-free, 877-438-4338. Even if you didn't get hooked, you should report phishing to the company or agency that was being impersonated and to the National Consumers League's National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or toll-free 800-876-7060.

Remember, security tools such as PIN numbers and passwords help keep your transactions safe. Keep them private!

This year the credit union added the Lincoln Fire Department's Fire House simulator to educate young members about fire safety and what to do incase of a fire. The Fire House simulated smoke, fire alarms, and how to escape the house in-case of a fire.

"We could not have asked for a better day or attendance. This event is growing each year and we are adding another new attraction which is sure to be a hit for the 10th anniversary," said Roger Smid, Marketing Director.

Do you want to avoid paying for private mortgage insurance (PMI)? Do you want a lower payment or would you like to pay less interest overall? How long are you likely to be in this house? Considering your answers to these questions will help to determine the best mortgage loan for you.

There are more differences between fixed rate and adjustable rate loans than meets the eye. The popular 30 year fixed rate mortgage has no surprises. Your rate is locked for the entire 30 year term and your loan will be paid in full in 30 years. An adjustable rate mortgage (ARM) sounds like it will contain more surprises, however, there are many things about an ARM that are anything but. Depending on which you choose, there can normally be a period in which the loan's interest rate is fixed and can be significantly lower than the 30 year fixed rate. When the fixed period is over, the loan's rate will adjust based on an index rate plus a margin over the index rate. When looking for an ARM, pay close attention to rate caps as well as the initial fixed rate period and you won't get any unexpected surprises.

Depending on the loan amount and the value of the home, you may be required to pay for PMI on your new loan. There are a couple of ways to avoid paying for this insurance. One way is to make a larger down payment. If you are not able to or would rather invest your savings elsewhere, you may still be able to structure your mortgage to avoid the monthly mortgage insurance premium. By taking out a first mortgage of no more than 80% of the value of the home and a second mortgage for the balance remaining you will not have to pay for PMI on the first mortgage loan. The Credit Union has a variety of second mortgage options that may work for you. There may still be limitations on how much the Credit Union can lend based on the value of the home, but it is something to consider.

If you are planning on living in the house for a short time you may want to consider an ARM that is fixed at a low rate for 5 or 7 years before it becomes adjustable. You will be paying your loan off by selling the house and you will not have to be concerned with the rate adjustment, as your loan will be paid off prior to any adjustment date. If you plan on retiring in this house or raising your family there, you may decide on a longer term fixed rate loan. We understand that you probably don't do this everyday. We know that you may have additional concerns regarding which loan to select. Our staff is here to help you in finding the mortgage that is right for you.

Fast & Accurate Ways to File Your Taxes

Your credit union is partnering with Tax Refund Express to offer the E-file Tax Packet Program beginning January 14, 2005. The tax packet program has many great features. The most paramount of these features is the Audit Service provided by the tax professionals at Tax Refund Express. Once you complete your tax return and send it, Tax Refund Express will enter it into a professional IRS approved tax software and then give it a complete review by a tax specialist before electronically filing it with the IRS. This process validates your return and helps ensure it for accuracy before the IRS receives it.

However, thats not all...this tax packet program also gives you a faster refund. Select Direct Deposit and you can expect your refund to be in your credit union account, after acknowledgement by the IRS, in as little as 7-12 days, compared to the traditional waiting period of 6-8 weeks when you mail your tax return directly to the IRS.

Tax Refund Express is an industry leader and has a solid history of professional tax filings. The audit review process conducted by Tax Refund Express resulted in taxpayers receiving over 1.2 million dollars collectively in increased refunds. That might be you! The process is quick and easy. Here is what you do:

1) Visit either credit union location and pick up a tax packet. If you filed your taxes electronically with the credit union last year, you will automatically receive a packet in the mail the first or second week of January.

2) Complete your tax return along with some brief documents from the tax packet.

3) Mail your tax return and documents to Tax Refund Express (Overnight mail service available from the credit union lobby).

4) Look for your direct deposit refund in your credit union account in as little as 7-12 days.

5) Fees ($35 Federal tax return, $15 State) are deducted out of your account by preauthorized debit at approximately the same time your tax refund is credited to your account.

The petitions, supporting the retention of credit unions not-for-profit, tax-exempt status, and recognizing the unique structure and role of credit unions, will be delivered to Congress as they return to Washington, D.C. for the next law-making session.

The overwhelming member response to this petition demonstrates the value members place on preserving the credit union option, said President Jerry Barnett. Guaranteed Auto Protection

Will your insurance pay off your loan if your vehicle is totaled...?

Most people believe that if their vehicle is totaled or stolen, their primary insurance will pay off their loan or lease balance. Think Again!

If your vehicle is totaled or stolen, your primary insurance carrier will usually pay only the actual cash value less your deductible. This amount could be substantially lower than your loan or lease balance.

The final result is a financial GAP where you must pay the difference between your loan or lease balance and your insurance settlement, which could mean thousands of dollars out of your pocket.

That is why many members have chosen GAP (Guaranteed Auto Protection). GAP coverage eliminates the out-of-pocket expense you would incur to pay off your loan or lease should your vehicle be stolen or totaled.

Learn more about GAP (Guaranteed Auto Protection) by contacting a Credit Union Financial Service Representative today!

Ideas for IRA, 401(k), Pension Roll-overs

Rollovers have these advantages:

  • Distributions, if rolled over properly, are not subject to current federal income taxation (except for the withholding on distributions that are not direct rollovers or direct plan-to-plan transfers).
  • Roll-over amounts will continue to accumulate earnings on a tax-deferred basis until eventually being distributed.

Planning Considerations
Before leaving a company or retiring, it is essential that an employee arrange the desired distribution procedure. Withholdings can be avoided by:

  • leaving the money in the employer's plan, if allowed under the terms of the plan; or
  • arranging for the direct transfer of funds to an IRA or eligible qualified retirement plan that accepts rollovers.

Mark Steinberger If either of these arrangements are made, no tax is due and the funds can continue to generate tax-deferred earnings. However, if the employer cuts a check for the employee's lump-sum benefit, the 20% withholding will automatically be deducted for federal income tax purposes.

For additional information on rollovers for IRAs, 401(k), or Pensions, please contact Mark Steinberger.

Congratulations: $1,300 Scholarship Recipient.
Melanie Newell, granddaughter of Ray PorathLincoln Goodyear Employees Federal Credit Union member Melanie Newell, Granddaughter of Ray Porath, was the winner of the Lincoln Chapter of Credit Unions 2003 Credit Unions for Higher Education Scholarship Contest.

Melanie's essay touched on how she grew frustrated with banks that charged high fees and service charges and didn't receive the personal attention she expected. She also wrote that her Grandfather Ray Porath, and long time member of the credit union since 1960, heard her frustrations and convinced her to join the credit union. "Members benefit from the credit union in many ways. You can depend on the Credit Union and know you will get honest and truthful service," said Ray Porath.

Her Grandfather's advice really stuck with Melanie. Jerry Barnett with Malanie Newell"The words of "trust" and "helping people" really meant something to me," she said about her Grandfather's experience with the credit union. She took her Grandfather's words of advice to heart and became a credit union member. Now, when she needs to conduct financial business she looks forward to the personal service and the attention she receives. "Every time I walk in I am greeted with a smile. Everyone is very nice and they make you feel like you are part of the credit union. I will be a credit union member for life," Melanie said with a smile. "I hope other members continue to get their family members involved with the credit union. It is a great place to do business," she added.

Melanie is currently a sophomore at the University of NE studying Psychology and Peace Studies. She is applying to a private Liberal Arts college in Minnesota to continue her education in Peace Studies.

In addition to her studies and work, Melanie is also very active in the community. She takes pride in being a positive role model and is involved with the local Mentoring Program for Junior High students.

The credit union volunteers, management and staff would like to congratulate Melanie and wish her luck in your continued education!

Your Credit Union:
Built by Generations of Tradition & Embarking on New Relations

PhotoYour credit union has proudly served members since October 5, 1955 and has built many professional and personal relationships during this time. These strong relationships helped establish a tradition of encouraging family members to join the credit union.

There are now second and third generation members enjoying the benefits from credit union membership. "This is a sign that a very strong tradition of loyalty and ownership has been established throughout the years," said Mary Sailors, Vice President of Operations.

The credit union has embarked on an exciting path built by a strong foundation of tradition of loyal members. The credit union is now open to "those who live, work, worship, or attend school in Lancaster County, NE." This is a new and exciting time for the credit union. "Our core Goodyear employee membership will always remain very important to us and our mission remains to help all members. Our efforts to assist members from all groups will not diminish," said Jerry Barnett, President. "This provides the new members with the opportunities to grow and build on the strong tradition in which existing members have grown to appreciate and take pride," said Roger Smid, Marketing Director.

Please share the credit union tradition with your family, neighbors and community! They can benefit from credit union membership only if they know they are eligible to join. Share your experiences and enthusiasm for your credit union, and they will thank you.

Continue to build or encourage your family members and neighbors to strengthen a tradition and share your credit union experience.

Another Deterrent to Identity Theft!
The Lincoln Goodyear Employees Federal Credit Union is participating in a new on-line consumer protection program: Verified by VISA.

Verified By VISA Verified by VISA is a payer authentication program designed by VISA to enable consumers to add on-line passwords to their existing cards to help prevent unauthorized use when making purchases over the Internet. When a consumer clicks BUY at checkout on a participating merchant's website, a pop-up window appears that contains a personal message set up by the consumer and a prompt for a password. The consumer enters their password and clicks SUBMIT. The consumer's identity is confirmed and the purchase process proceeds. Verified by VISA will help card issuers and merchants reduce their exposure to fraud losses from online transactions, as well as reduce cardholder's purchase disputes by preventing the unauthorized use of a cardholder's card number. "Verified by VISA will help to validate consumer identity and will further help prevent the possibility of identity theft," said Mary Sailors, Vice President of Operations.

You can enroll by clicking on this link or you may auto-enroll when making a purchase at a participating merchant. Enrollment will be required when making a purchase on-line at a participating merchant. A pop-up box will appear with Verified by VISA’s logo prompting you to enter certain information from your card and then click Activate now to continue with enrollment.

THERE IS NO CHARGE FOR THE VERIFIED BY VISA PROTECTION.
